Fresh anti-government protests are being reported in Harbu Woreda of Northern Welo, Amhara region. Harbu is the nearest and largest district to Kobo, where dozens of civilians were killed in the past few days, with a population of just over 200,000 people. Today’s protest is being held in its two towns of Mersa and Wurgessa.
Security forces have reportedly opened fire against protesters but the casualty has not yet been counted. Some local officials have also been assaulted by the locals.
Since the protests in the nearby zone of Woldia last week at least 25 civilian anti-government protesters have been killed by Ethiopian government securities.
Since 2015, Ethiopians, mainly in the Amhara and Oromo regions, have been protesting against the EPRDF ruled government demanding it to step aside.
