A USD 57-million project to renovate 70-year-old Africa Hall is set to begin this September, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) disclosed.
In an email exchange with The Reporter Thursday, a representative of the ECA said that the project’s design, which is included in the first stage of the renovation project of the iconic edifice, has already been finalized.
According to the project office, “While around USD 37 million would be spent on actual construction, the balance would be used for other specialized management and related services required for the undertaking of the project.” The project is on schedule, and is expected to be completed by 2021, as originally planned, the project office noted.
Following the UN General Assembly’s budget approval for the renovation work, it was disclosed that UN member countries and donors would foot the bill.
Last week, the Swiss government pledged a financial assistance worth 100,000 Swiss francs to support the renovation project, according to a statement issued by the ECA’s Communications Department.
“Apart from being a beautiful piece of art, Africa Hall embodies some of the finest parts of Africa’s history, and we are really appreciative of your support,” acting ECA Executive Secretary Abdalla Hamdok told a visiting Swiss delegation at the ECA premises.
