Meta turns 50, introduces bigger bottle
Meta Abo Brewery, makers of the Meta beer, the second oldest beer in the country, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In a yearlong celebration, the company is aiming to make a comeback to its once number one beer in the country.
In a press conference arranged at its distribution center in the Jack Ross area on Thursday, the company introduced its newly refurbished signature beer.
Owned by Diageo, the world’s leading seller of premium liquors, the company also said it has began exporting its products in areas with large Ethiopia populations, such as to the United Kingdom, the United States and Israel.
“Meta is the beer Ethiopians have loved since 1967 for its distinct taste”, Yayehyirad Abate, Meta Abo Brewery Corporate Relations director said. “It exists to bring us together to celebrate the possibilities of our future and the strength.”
In celebration of its milestone, the company launched a new 50cl bottle with a commutative label that has its anniversary message, with prizes including a grand price of 50,000 Birr under its cap.
“Meta beer is looking progressively in the future and has been refreshed with an upgraded taste and renewed dynamism,” Meta brand manager, Biruk Belay, said. “It still honors its roots – its heritage, originality, full bodies and resilience and with the new pack, Meta will continue being a true Ethiopian beer – for real enjoyment.”
Meta Brewery was sold to Diageo, a New York Stock Exchange listed company in 2011 at a cost of USD 225 million, a record sum at the time. It has since invested USD 119 million to its operation as the local beer market intensifies with the emergence of international brands entering the local beer industry.
The importer of brand name wines and liquors, including the Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, Smirnoff and others, Diageo has produced its Azmera, Zemen and Guinness brand to a lukewarm reception, while Meta still dominates in some parts of the country.
Meta was recently honored with the New Vision for Development Prize at the World Economic Forum in New York for its sourcing for growth program. This recognition comes as the company has been in pioneer in the industry, partnering with local farmers in the good practices of agriculture, accumulation of its barley products and offering practical training to local residents.
